Maurice Slevin discusses the likelihood of a cure for cancer and how cancer is likely to be managed in the future.
“Many cancers are already cured.
There are many people with cancer who have got rid of the disease and live a normal life expectancy.
But a cure for cancer in its totality, in all its forms, is likely to be a long time coming.
It’s a very complicated disease.”
“What we are likely to have in the near future is treatments which will stabilize the cancer.
Which won't make it go away, but will make it into a chronic illness which is there but, provided you take the treatment, it's not bothering you.
Just like diabetes, high blood pressure and angina, which are treated to control rather than to eliminate the disease.”
